With the Internet playing such an integral part of our tech-savvy lives, it is of little wonder how we have relied on it for not just work related aspects, but for socially related ones as well; both of which transcends geographical and cultural barriers that would have conventionally held us back. And this extension of the Internet, is what we know of as Social Media.

Despite being considered a part of New Media Technology, the history of Social Media is rich and its roots can be thought of as long drawn from generations ago.

With the Social Media platform growing steadily with each year of improvements and innovation in the cyber world of the internet, it is also growing more impossible to readily fulfill Marshall Mcluhan's definition of a Global Village; where the world seems so connected, it feels like it's been folded into half. And yet, an even bigger problem spawning from this, is the level of addiction to such convenience and connectivity.

Countless long lost friendships have been rekindled and relationships have been both established and maintained with components of Social Media, like Twitter, Facebook, Blogs and Skype (just to name a few).

But while we celebrate the capability with such media formats, a question we cannot ignore is this, "Are we opening cans of worms along with it?" Worms like Internet addiction, Social isolation, Invasion of privacy are current issues we face as part of the "Electronic Generation".

So as the Internet progresses from web 2.0 to 3.0, how much more are our lives going to be affected with positive and negative factors with continued (and increased) reliance and usage?
