Entry 3: e-Commerce

Gone are the days when shopping meant having to dress up, head to the mall, step through the glass door entrance and shop till your legs ache. These days, shopping can be so easily done in your pajamas, teeth un-brushed, hair un-styled, on your bed, on your sofa, or on the bowl in your bathroom, and any other comforts of your own home.

From clothing to food, gadgets to toiletries, and just about every other thing can be bought online on sites such as Amzon, eBay, Apple Store, McDonald's and a whole web of online stores. With the convenient, real-time experience, it is no wonder that many of us are now cyber-buyer converts.

But why is this so? Well, perhaps this movement is coming at a perfect time when we are in the age of quick advancements. We need to get as much done within the least possible time frame. We multi-task and strive to be as efficient as we can be. That is, if we're mostly working on the internet, we could also shop while working on the internet.

Yet, another factor why we do it so much is because e-shopping has utilized Marshall McLuhan's Global Village, making possible purchases that were previously not possible due to geographical barriers.

However, despite all the convenience cyber shopping has given us, we still have to careful and understand that we are the ones responsible for our own safe online shopping. Before you decide on an online purchase, consider the following:

  • The authenticity of the website
  • If the website abides by legal codes
  • If the website is secure
  • If after-sales service is offered

So, the next time we make an online purchase (perhaps, that snazzy new iPad 3?), let us take a minute to appreciate how safe our transaction will be; and at the same time, be reminded to keep a lookout at any other new purchasing sites. The last thing that we, as cyber shoppers would want, is a bad online shopping experience we can't get out of.
